How to choose the best soap for your skin type

Overview of a Soap

Soap is a unique compound known to humanity from ancient times. It possesses the property to remove dirt & grease from a surface chemically.

Soaps are water-soluble sodium salts of fatty acids made from fat and oils by treating them with a base such as sodium hydroxide. The process is pretty simple where you heat the oils & fat and treat them with an alkali to initiate a chemical process called saponification.

How Does Soap Work?

The urge to clean seems to be as old as civilization & hence all of us use soap in our day to day life.

To understand soap, you need to understand two more terms i.e. polar and nonpolar. Nonpolar compounds, like oil and grease, can’t dissolve in water. Polar compounds can dissolve in water. When soap is mixed with water, the mixture contains two types of molecules that are hydrophilic, (i.e. water loving) and are attracted to water. While other molecules are hydrophobic in nature (water fearing) and are repelled by water.

Soap is a natural surfactant. A surfactant is any substance that tends to reduce the surface tension of a liquid in which it is dissolved. When greasy dirt, fat, or oil is mixed with soapy water, the soap molecules arrange themselves into tiny clusters called micelles. The oil-loving (hydrophobic) tail sticks to the oil and trap oil in the center where it can’t come into contact with the water.

How Soap works

With the oil trapped safely in the center, the micelle is soluble in water. As the soapy water is rinsed away, the greasy dirt goes along with it. This is the basic mechanism of how soap works.
